Got Milk???

I am blessed to have a precious baby boy. And he is a champion nurser. He is also a daily reminder to me of what God wants me to be like. 1 Peter 2:2-3 says, "Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good." This verse sounds very spiritual, but it is also very practical.

For starters, babies who nurse, nurse A LOT. They need to eat every couple hours during the day, and a couple times at night as well. They digest the food quickly, and then need more. How applicable this is to believers in Christ! We need to be fed by our Lord OFTEN. We would do well to seek God for spiritual nourishment all throughout our day.

Another thing I think is important to point out is that as a result of constant feedings, babies grow FAST, both physically and developmentally. Sometimes, it is hard for parents to keep their children in clothes! I have read before that most children at age two are approximately half of their adult height. That is amazing to me! As followers of Christ, we should be growing quickly. After time, the growth slows, but unlike our physical bodies, we should never stop growing altogether.

Finally, as a result of such physical closeness, babies usually enjoy a precious intimacy with their mothers. And this is the best part of the analogy- by regularly coming to the Lord to be fed, nourished and loved, we also enjoy closeness with God and the blessings of being loved by Him in return.

May we all crave pure, spiritual milk.
